Kindergarden

Transitioning from our Preschool to our Lower School, Kindergarten provides an enriched educational program which accomplishes our goal of integral formation through Montessori teaching techniques. It is also when our gender specific classes begin. We study math, reading, language, history, botany and zoology with a variety of hands-on materials and learning methods. We engage the students with all of their senses. In addition to textbooks and worksheets, for example, we sing songs about the solar system in science and we cut cookies to learn about fractions in math.

Birthday Celebrations

Birthday celebrations are a time of quiet appreciation for each year the child has spent on the planet. The child has a chance to walk around a candle (representing the sun) while holding a globe in his/her hands. A brief outline of what he/she did for each year of his/her life will allow the teacher to describe the child’s life as he/she walks. Parents are encouraged and welcome to participate in the celebration. If a family chooses, a book may be donated to the school in the child’s name. For those children who have summer birthdays, celebrations will be held toward the end of the school year.

Homework

Homework consists of phonics, reading, and math. Homework is done on a daily basis and is not meant to overwhelm the child. At this age, your child should only work on homework for about 5– 10 minutes each day at most. The homework folder may also be used to send home notices and reminders.

Sharing

Sharing will be done every Friday. This is the time for your child to bring in an item from home that they wish to share with the class such as a book, puzzle, an educational item, or something of importance.
